Shopify glossary

Plain-English definitions of the storefront and app terms we use across these guides.

Announcement bar

A thin banner on a storefront used for promotions, free-shipping thresholds, flash-sale countdowns, or store notices. See Announcements.

Average order value (AOV)

The average amount a customer spends per order. Raising it — for example by cross-selling a full outfit — lifts revenue without needing new traffic.

App Store Optimization (ASO)

Improving an app’s Shopify App Store listing — title, subtitle, keywords, and recent review velocity — so it ranks for the searches merchants actually use.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

A Core Web Vitals metric measuring unexpected layout movement as a page loads. High CLS frustrates shoppers and can hurt search rankings, so storefront widgets should reserve their space.

Complete the look

A product-page widget that turns one photo into a shoppable outfit by surfacing the other items shown — also called “shop the look.” See Shop The Look.

Fit finder

An on-page tool where a shopper enters a few measurements and receives a recommended size for that specific product, so they buy one size instead of two. See Size & Fit Guide.

Free-shipping bar

A progress bar showing how much more a shopper must add to qualify for free shipping — a simple nudge toward larger carts.

Geocoding

Converting a street address or place name into map coordinates (latitude and longitude) so it can be placed on a map. Results are usually cached to avoid repeat lookups.

Infinite scroll

A browsing pattern that loads more products automatically as the shopper scrolls, instead of clicking through numbered pages. See Infinite Scroll & Load More and our SEO-safe guide.

LocalBusiness structured data

Schema.org markup describing a physical location — name, address, opening hours — so search engines can show it in “near me” results.

Map tiles

The image or vector squares that make up an interactive map. Open or self-hosted tiles (built from OpenStreetMap data) avoid the need for a paid map API key.

Pagination

Splitting a collection across numbered pages with crawlable URLs. Search engines follow those URLs to reach every product, which is why keeping pagination as a fallback matters under infinite scroll.

SEO-safe

Built so search engines can still crawl and index your content — for example, keeping real paginated URLs as a fallback when you add infinite scroll, and changing no theme code.

Size chart

A table of garment or product measurements that helps shoppers choose the right size before buying. Per-product charts beat generic S/M/L labels. See Size & Fit Guide.

Store locator

An interactive map and searchable list that helps shoppers find your stores, dealers, or stockists near them. See Store Locator.

Theme app extension (app block)

A Shopify app block merchants add from the theme editor on Online Store 2.0 themes — no code changes, and removed cleanly on uninstall. It’s the modern, SEO-safe way to add storefront features.
