How to set up click & collect (BOPIS) on Shopify

“Click & collect” — also called BOPIS, “buy online, pick up in store” — lets a shopper order on your site and walk out of a real store with it the same day. Shopify can process that order natively. What it won’t do on its own is tell a shopper, before they buy, which of your locations actually has it and whether that store is even open right now.

What click & collect needs, piece by piece

Three things have to be true for buy-online-pickup-in-store to work at all. Stock has to be tracked at the location level, so Shopify knows which store can fulfil the order. “Local pickup” has to be turned on as a delivery method for each of those locations. And somewhere — ideally before a shopper reaches checkout — they need a way to see which location to pick, how far it is, and whether it’s open. Shopify handles the first two natively. The third is where most stores fall down.

The gap: pre-purchase discovery

Shopify’s checkout will offer a shopper a dropdown of eligible pickup locations once they’re already checking out. That’s fine for someone who has decided to buy. It does nothing for the much larger group still deciding — someone searching “[your brand] near me” on their phone, or landing on your homepage wondering if pickup is even an option nearby. Without a public, crawlable page that answers that question, the demand has nowhere to land, and it quietly turns into a delivery order — or a competitor’s pickup order — instead.

Turn on local pickup (native Shopify)

1. Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery in your Shopify admin.
2. Add “Local pickup” as a delivery method for each location that can fulfil pickup orders, and set pickup instructions.
3. Keep inventory accurate at that location. Shopify only offers pickup for stock it can see there.

Add a pickup-location finder shoppers can actually find

This is the piece that turns “we offer pickup” into shoppers who use it. It installs as a theme app extension, so there’s no theme code to write:

1. Import your locations. Bulk-import every store from a CSV file instead of adding each one by hand.
2. Geocode addresses to map pins. Geocode each address into coordinates so it drops onto the map and can be sorted by distance.
3. Show opening hours on every pin. A pickup point that’s closed when someone arrives is worse than no pickup point at all.
4. Add the map block from the theme editor. Place it on your homepage, a dedicated pickup-locations page, or both — no code, no API key.
