Google Maps embed vs. a real store locator: what an iframe can’t do

A practical guide for stores currently using a bare map embed · updated August 2026

Dropping a Google Maps iframe onto a page is the fastest way to show a store address, and it’s usually the first thing a Shopify store tries. It works right up until a shopper wants to search, filter, or find the nearest of several locations — and that’s where the gap between “a map” and a store locator shows up.

What an embed actually gives you

A Google Maps embed is a single view centred on an address, or a handful of pins dropped by hand, wrapped in an iframe. It pans and zooms because Google’s own map does, and that’s the whole feature set — whatever the embed shows is whatever you get.

What it can’t do

When a plain embed is genuinely fine

If you have exactly one location — a single flagship store, showroom, or office — and nobody needs to compare distance or filter anything, an embed does the job. A locator earns its keep the moment there’s more than one location, or shoppers are searching for you before they ever land on your site.

How to move off an iframe (no code)

  1. Import your locations. Bulk-import every store from a CSV file instead of dropping pins by hand.
  2. Geocode addresses to map pins. Geocode each address into coordinates so it can be sorted by distance.
  3. Add the map block from the theme editor. Place it on a page — no code, no API key to configure.
  4. Turn on crawlable per-location pages. Enable a page per location with LocalBusiness structured data so each one gets found on “near me” searches.

Do it with Store Locator

Merch - Store Locator replaces the iframe entirely, with none of its gaps. Import your locations by CSV, geocode them to map pins, and get distance-sorted search, filtering, and opening hours — with no Google Maps API key, ever. Crawlable per-location pages mean your stores can be found on “near me” searches instead of staying invisible inside an embed, and built-in search analytics show what shoppers are actually looking for. It’s live on the Shopify App Store, free for up to 3 locations, with paid plans from $2.99/month scaling to unlimited locations and 15-language localization, plus a 14-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Google Maps API key for a real store locator?

No, not with a keyless locator. It uses open map tiles instead of the Google Maps API, so there’s no key to create, expose, or get billed for.

Will switching off a Google Maps embed hurt my Google Business Profile?

No. A store locator on your own site is separate from and complements your Google Business Profile listing — it doesn’t replace it, and both can point shoppers to the same store.

Is a Google Maps embed bad for SEO?

On its own, yes for local search. The address and hours inside an iframe aren’t crawlable HTML, so there’s no page for search engines to index or rank for “near me” searches.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. It’s free for up to 3 locations. Paid plans add more locations and 15-language localization, with a 14-day free trial.
